The one-year pilot programme, supported by the Department of Conservation, has set up activators in three key regions: Te Tauihu (Top of the South), Ōtautahi (Christchurch) and Waikato. We intend to extend the pilot beyond one year and three regions to a more widespread network of activators around Aotearoa.
All three regions have active predator free groups working on land of ecological significance, such as reserves and parks. A key part of the activator role is providing resources and guidance and running events and workshops so groups can learn from each other and experts about everything from trap-building to monitoring to engaging volunteers. Activators are also a crucial connector between community groups and organisations like DOC and regional councils.
