Make your own tunnel

Rat traps should always be contained within a tunnel to keep kids and pets safe. They also ensure introduced predators such as rats and stoats approach the trap from the right direction and the trap can operate properly. We’ve pulled together some instructions on how to make your own tunnel.

What you will need

Tunnels are typically simple wooden boxes that have mesh at each end to ensure predators can see through the length of them.

You can purchase a trap inside a tunnel in our shop or it is relatively easy to make your own tunnel. Follow our easy-to-use template to build your own. You’ll need the following equipment:

  • H4 treated radiata or similar
  • 10mm galvanised weld mesh
  • Galvanised decking nails
  • Stainless steel staples
  • Tools.

Make a weka proof length tunnel

If you live in areas with weka or have particularly inquisitive pets you can build a slightly longer tunnel to make it harder for them to access — these are called weka length tunnels.
