The Timms trap is a very versatile kill trap – perhaps not my favourite for just possums, but when you consider what it can do – it is right up there with the best.

If you would like it to kill both possums and rats – the first thing you need to do is to set it on hair trigger. Mind your fingers and bend the bait rod forward until the trap only just sets – too far forward and you won’t be able to set it.

Mount it on a flat surface so the base is well sealed – preferably up on a log, a stump or on a timber ramp – such as a piece of 200*25 – we need the rats to enter through the front rather than under the trap. It is an advantage if some furry predators can walk up to the trap and put their head straight inside.

Drill a hole in a milk bottle top and push it up the rod – so it just sits on or above the right angle bend – fill the bottle top with my favourite bait – Goodnature “Possum Paste” – or maybe “Smooth in a Tube” is just as good.

Cut a fresh red apple into quarters or thirds and push it up the road to the bend – it should just sit under the bottle top and just fit above the cross rod – to me – a red skin looks good from outside – but not sure how it looks at night to a possum.

Add some extra lure around the trap with some flour mixed with icing sugar – and spray some aniseed mixed with water inside the trap.

If you wish to target other furry predators – you will need to use some meat or fish on the bait rod – rabbit is great and most meat eaters just can’t resist it – you may need to tie it to the rod.

Set the trap and you are ready to go – check the trap as often as possible as some animals get ugly very fast in the summer – particularly hogs if it is on the ground.

    Good luck trapping

Just for your information, Rats can breed up to 1500 in a year, BUT this changes to the potential to breed up to 3 MILLION in the second, obviously this is dependant on food supply and PREDATION, so when we kill most of the predators the only control on them will be food availability, so if you miss 1 pregnant female, you are way back from where you started, hungry rats willl do a lot of prey switching, Bang go the baby birds.
So the 4 or 40 or 40,000 rats you kill will be countered extremely rapidly.
This is what you getmainland island has a mouse plage no the ecosystems gone when you intrfere with an ecosystem, its not a perfect ecosystem but its the only one we have got.
Remember that we dont kill sharks anymore.
